Hello! I’m Dr. Andrea Stern, a licensed clinical psychologist in the state of Virginia. I earned my license to practice psychology in 2002, and I have been providing psychotherapeutic services in the greater Richmond area since then. I view the therapeutic relationship as a central component to treatment, and I enjoy the process of creating that relationship with my clients. My client-centered approach includes process-oriented and self-exploration techniques, in combination with cognitive-behavioral, mindfulness, and behavioral techniques. I tailor my therapeutic practice to the needs of my clients and use numerous approaches to help people achieve their personal goals and live the lives they desire.

After completing my undergraduate degree at Tufts University, I earned my doctoral degree in clinical psychology at George Washington University. I completed my internship at Hutchings Psychiatric Center and St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse, New York before moving to Virginia to complete my residency at the Virginia Treatment Center for Children.

Following my education and training, I provided mental health services at a non-profit, integrated community health system dedicated to serving uninsured and underinsured clients in a rural area. I then worked at a community-based school and group home system for children with autism and intellectual disabilities. Prior to opening River City Counseling in 2020, I worked at Commonwealth Counseling Associates for 15 years as an outpatient psychologist, helping children, teenagers, and adults with a variety of mental health concerns.

Regardless of the setting, it is always most important to me to treat my clients with care, empathy, and respect.
